Son charged in death of 70-year-old woman, Toronto’s first homicide of 2023

A 70-year-old woman is dead and a man is under arrest as police investigate Toronto’s first homicide of the year.

Police were called to the area of Finch Avenue East and Seneca Hill Drive, west of Don Mills Road, around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Emergency crews located a woman in medical distress at the scene. Life-saving measures were provided but the victim died from her injuries.

She has been identified as Joy Barnwell of Toronto.

Police have arrested 27-year-old Michael Rawlins of Toronto and charged him with second-degree murder.

Investigators have not indicated what the relationship is between the two but CityNews has learned the suspect is the victim’s son.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact them.
