Brampton man charged in lottery scam targeting elderly

A Brampton man has been charged after police allege he targetted seniors in a lottery scam, defrauding victims of more than $200,000 over a span of several years.

Police say the suspect contacted elderly people from across Canada over the phone and convinced them they were lottery sweepstakes winners.

All they had to do was send funds to cover fees to collect their winnings of millions of dollars and vehicles.

Police say the scam was in play between 2018 and 2022.

On Friday, February 3, members of the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau arrested Javune Ledgister, 27, of Brampton.

He’s been charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

“Peel Regional Police would like to remind our residents that scammers will use any means necessary to convince you that their requests are legitimate,” police said in a release.

“Protect yourself, and always avoid sending money or personal information to someone you haven’t met.”
