Man rescued after falling into icy waters at Toronto’s waterfront

A man has been rescued from the icy waters of Lake Ontario. First responders describe the tricky rescue operation that played out along Toronto's Queens Quay waterfront.

Emergency crews were able to safely rescue a man who fell into the icy waters of Lake Ontario at Toronto’s waterfront on Tuesday morning.

Crews were called to the area of York Street and Queens Quay just after 4 a.m. after getting reports of a person in the water.

Police confirm a man fell into the lake between a brick wall and a ship. He began crying for help, a person nearby heard the pleas and threw the man a life preserver.

Emergency crews arrived and were able to pull the man to safety after lowering a ladder into the water.

He was brought to hospital in stable condition.

“If it wasn’t for the quick action of a Toronto medic with a shepherd’s hook, and the quick actions of Toronto Fire, this wouldn’t have had the positive outcome that it did,” says David Quinn, acting Toronto Fire Platoon Chief.

This is the second water rescue in the city in less than 24 hours. On Monday, three people were pulled from the water near the Toronto Islands after falling through the ice.

Police say two people fell through the ice while they were skating, and a third person fell in while trying to help the pair. All three, a woman and two men, were sent to the hospital with “hypothermic conditions” but are expected to recover.
