Police make arrest in alleged hate-motivated assault at TTC subway station

Toronto police say they’ve arrested a suspect following an investigation into an alleged hate-motivated assault at Bloor-Yonge subway station last month.

Police were called to the station on the morning of Jan. 18 after reports of an assault.

A man reportedly struck a person on the head, causing their religious head covering to fall to the ground.

Police say the suspect also made derogatory comments towards the victim before fleeing the area.

On Tuesday police arrested Omar Ashanophie Johnson, 34, at Sherbourne subway station.

He’s facing charges of assault and breach of probation.
