Police charge man in cheque fraud scheme targeting students from Korea

Toronto police have charged a man they accuse of acting like a good guy while writing bad cheques.

In a release Thursday, police said the suspect travelled between Niagara Falls, Waterloo, Kingston, Toronto and Edmonton, befriending international students from Korea.

But police allege his intentions were anything but friendly.

After gaining the trust of students he met in libraries and schools, police allege the man would tell them that he was from out-of-town, had lost his wallet, and needed money to pay for accommodations.

“The accused told his victims that he would have a family member deposit funds into their accounts and, in turn, have victims withdraw cash for him,” police explained.

“The accused issued cheques to victims with non-sufficient funds, and the victims sustained losses.”

On Thursday, police arrested Man Seok Marvin Choi, 50, and charged him with fraud under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and failure to comply with probation.
