A veteran Toronto police officer is facing nearly half-a-dozen charges after police allege he crashed his personal vehicle while driving impaired, then refused to stop for police. When he was finally pulled over, police further allege he refused a breath sample.
Constable Michael Juma, 49, has 14 years with Toronto Police Service, and has been suspended with pay while his case makes its way through the courts.
Police say on Monday, March 20 at around 3:45 a.m., the off-duty officer was driving his personal vehicle when he struck a parked car in the Shuter and Parliament streets area.
Police say he continued driving southbound on Parliament Street, where police tried to pull him over.
He allegedly kept driving, finally pulling over at King and Sumach streets.
“The accused was placed under arrest, at which time he refused to provide a breath sample,” police said in a release.
Juma is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, failure to stop for police, refusing a breath demand, impaired operation, and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
His next court date set for May, 2, 2023.
