Ted Hsu officially joins Ontario Liberal leadership race

By Richard Southern and John Marchesan

A second candidate has entered the race to become the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

Ted Hsu launched his campaign in Kingston on Sunday alongside hometown music hero Rob Baker of the Tragically Hip.

Hsu says he wants to give his party a “fresh start” with Ontarians and help Liberals earn back the trust of voters.

Elections Ontario shows Hsu officially registered his name as a candidate back on May 20.

Hsu has been the MPP for Kingston and the Islands since the provincial election a year ago and is one of only seven Liberal MPPs.

Hsu joins Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MP for the Beaches-East York, as the only registered candidates so far although several others are thought to be contemplating a leadership bid.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie told CityNews earlier this week she has set up an exploratory committee for a potential leadership bid.

Federal MP and former provincial cabinet minister Yasir Naqvi, Don Valley West MPP Stephanie Bowman and Don Valley East MPP Adil Shamji have said they are also exploring bids for the provincial party leadership.

The Ontario Liberals will announce a new leader on Dec. 2 to replace Steven Del Duca, who resigned after the party did not win enough seats in last year’s election to have official party status at the legislature for the second campaign in a row.
