A woman is dead, and at least eight others are injured after a transit bus collided with multiple vehicles, causing an eight-car crash in Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police were called to the Rexwood Road and Derry Road East area just after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday for reports of a serious collision.

One woman was assessed with life-threatening injuries and later died in the hospital.

A spokesperson with Peel Regional Police said eight vehicles were involved in the crash. Photos from the scene show a Beck taxi cab was one of the vehicles damaged.

Paramedics tell CityNews one person is being treated for serious injuries, and seven others were taken to a hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

Peel Regional Police Const. Sarah Patten says a Mississauga (MiWay) transit bus “was the first initial contact in the collision,” which forced a chain reaction.

“It’s my understanding that quite a few vehicles were stopped at a red light facing eastbound on Derry Road at Rexwood Road, at which time the transit bus continued through, causing the collision,” Const. Patten said at the scene.

A female bus driver was taken to a hospital as a precaution but was not seriously injured. It’s unclear if charges will be laid.
