A 21-year-old man is facing charges after seeking out the services of sex workers and then allegedly robbing them at a GTA hotel.
Durham police arrested a man on August 16 following an investigation into the robbery of sex professionals.
It’s alleged that the male suspect arranged to meet with the sex professionals at a local hotel in Ajax. The suspect then robbed the victims.
On Friday, police identified the accused as 21-year-old Fawad Abdalay of Whitby, Ont.
He’s been charged with two counts of robbery with an offensive weapon, the possession of weapons dangerous and obtaining sexual services for consideration. The accused was released from custody on an undertaking.
A Durham police spokesperson noted in a news release that the 2013 Supreme Court decision that ruled Canada’s laws concerning prostitution were considered unconstitutional.
“The laws changed to provide a layer of safety for those involved in the sex trade however, the purchase of these services continues to be illegal,” the police spokesperson said. “The sex trade is still considered a high-risk lifestyle, and police would like to remind those involved of the resources available.”
