A man is dead and a homicide investigation is underway after an early morning shooting in downtown Toronto.

Emergency crews were called to the area of College Street and Spadina Avenue around 4:50 a.m. Monday.

Police say there were a group of two or three people arguing outside when one person pulled out a gun and shot another person three times.

A man in his 40s was found outside a storefront on Spadina with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he was eventually pronounced dead.

Police say two suspects were seen walking on the eastside of Spadina before entering a vehicle and driving northbound away from the scene. No other suspect information has been made available.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation. Investigators do not believe the shooting was random and say there is no threat to public safety.

Spadina is closed in both directions from College to Nassau Street for the investigation.
