York Regional Police say a teen was clocked driving over 120 kilometers-per-hour in a 60 zone in Markham. Momin Quershi reports.

A young driver had his license suspended and his parents’ car impounded after he was caught going double the speed limit in Markham.

York Regional Police (YRP) pulled over a driver near Elgin Mills Road and Highway 48 on the evening of Aug. 16 after clocking an SUV travelling 124 kilometres/hour in a 60 zone.

A video from YRP posted to social media shows an officer approaching the stopped driver and letting him know how fast he was going.

“That’s more than double the speed limit, so you’re stunt driving,” the officer says.

The driver confirmed to the officer that he has a G2 license and says the vehicle he was driving belongs to his parents. Police say the driver had just gotten his licence days earlier.

“There’s some consequences that are going to happen right now,” the officer responds.

Police confirm the driver received a pair of tickets for speeding and stunt driving. He also had his drivers license suspended for 30 days and the car was impounded for two weeks.

Police noted in the video post that the young driver alluded to making a three-hour trek back to his Richmond Hill home instead of having his parents come pick him up.

“I need you to get on the phone and get somebody to come pick you up,” the officer can be heard saying. The video then cuts to the driver being asked if anyone was on their way to pick him up..

“I didn’t explicitly ask them to come pick me up,” the driver says. “I think I might give walking a try.”

In the end, the footage appears to show the driver agreeing to call an Uber to pick him up as a tow truck shows up to take the vehicle away.
