A severe thunderstorm watch will be in place in Toronto for much of Thursday evening into the early morning. It will be a cooler weekend but a pleasant one.

A severe thunderstorm watch has ended in Toronto after Environment Canada warned of torrential rainfall producing local amounts of 30 to 50 millimetres.

Canada’s weather agency said thunderstorms would track southeastward over the region through Thursday evening. The primary threats were hail and heavy rainfall.

Nickel or toonie-sized hail was also possible in some areas.

Other parts of the GTA were under a similar severe thunderstorm watch, but those have since been lifted. This included Halton-Peel, Hamilton and Waterloo-Wellington, among other regions. There were widespread severe thunderstorm warnings across southern Ontario.

In Toronto, the rain will continue into Friday morning before easing up in the afternoon, leading to a clear evening.

Temperatures are expected to drop to start the weekend, with more rain expected on Saturday with a daytime high of 23 C and the chance of scattered thunderstorms.

Sunday is shaping up to be a sunny, albeit cooler, August day, with a forecasted daytime high of 22 C.
