Any Ontarians heading out to buy liquor as of this week will want to be sure to bring a reusable shopping bag.
Paper bags are no longer available at LCBO locations as of Sep. 5. The crown corporation announced the plan to phase out single-use paper bags earlier this year.
Customers will have the option to buy a reusable bag in-store. Boxes and eight-pack carrier for cans and small bottles will also be available for free.
The LCBO says the move will remove nearly 135 million paper bags annually and will save the equivalent of 188,000 trees each year, and divert more than 2,600 tonnes of waste from landfills.
“This initiative will help to minimize our impact on the environment and create a more sustainable Ontario,” reads a release at the time of the announcement to scrap paper bags. “We thank our customers for helping us to take better care of the planet.”
The LCBO permanently did away with plastic bags 15 years ago.
