Oshawa man charged for assaulting officer during impaired driving arrest

A man from Oshawa is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted a Durham Regional Police Service officer while he was being arrested on suspicions of impaired driving.

DRPS officers responded to an impaired driver call at a restaurant parking lot in the area of Taunton Road East and Garden Street in Whitby just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 27.

Police said the suspect vehicle was observed driving “in an unsafe and suspicious manner,” leading to officers conducting a traffic stop. Officers spoke with the driver and determined that the man was showing signs of impairment.

It’s alleged that when DRPS officers attempted to arrest the driver, he resisted and struck an officer repeatedly. The man was taken into custody at the scene.

The officer was not seriously injured.

On Tuesday, police said 46-year-old Peter Nihan Scott of Oshawa was charged with operation while impaired, assaulting a peace officer and two counts of assault with intent to resist arrest.

The accused was released on an undertaking.

Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact investigators.
