Police release new info on Oshawa crash that killed 1, injured 9 others

Durham Regional Police officers say a person is dead and eight others have been injured after a nine-vehicle crash in Oshawa on Saturday.

A 41-year-old woman has been identified as the victim who died following a major collision involving nine vehicles, Durham Regional Police say.

On Sat. Aug. 10, police responded to a call about a traffic incident in Oshawa at approximately 12:15 p.m. Officers arrived to find multiple people with injuries and one woman who they say died at the scene.

Investigators are now releasing new details about the moments leading up to the crash.

According to a statement released Monday, police allege that a black Mercedes sedan being operated by a 40-year-old male from Toronto, was travelling southbound on Ritson Road South at a high rate of speed.

Officers allege that the Mercedes entered the curb lane and struck a white Nissan being operated by a 41-year-old woman from Oshawa.

The driver of the Nissan then lost control of her car, striking a Chevy Orlando, which then caught on fire.

Police say the white Nissan then proceeded to smash into two other vehicles, which also caught fire. A chain reaction was then set off involving multiple vehicles.

Meanwhile, police allege that the black Mercedes, “continued southbound after the initial collision, crossing the northbound lanes and careening onto the property on the northeast corner,” a statement reads. “As it crossed the property it struck the rear corner of a chip-truck causing the awning to collapse on a male party that was awaiting food. The Mercedes then crashed into a light pole.”

The 41-year-old woman in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene and nine other people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been laid at this time; however, officers say the collision is still under investigation.

Durham Regional Police are now looking to make contact with the driver of a Black Chrysler 300 that was struck in the rear left corner while in the westbound turning lane at Bloor Street, in order to document their involvement in the crash.
