Police try to ID man fatally struck by TTC bus near Ossington Station

Toronto police are trying to identify a man who was fatally struck by a TTC bus near Ossington Station on Tuesday night.

The incident happened near Bloor Street and Ossington Avenue just before 8:30 p.m.

Police said a man believed to be in his 50s exited the subway station when a TTC bus turned right to go south on Ossington Avenue. The victim was pinned under the front right side of the bus and later rushed to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.

Police later confirmed that the man died in hospital. The cause of the collision is under investigation.

“On behalf of the TTC, I extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased. Our thoughts are also with the bus operator who was involved,” TTC CEO Greg Percy wrote in a statement shared on X.

Authorities said efforts are underway by the coroner’s office to confirm the identity of the deceased, who is described as Asian, five foot four and approximately 176 pounds. He wore green camouflaged pants, a dark-coloured winter jacket, and a brown toque.

The TTC issued an alert to advise commuters that the 63 Ossington bus would not stop near Ossington Station due to the collision. Regular service resumed just after midnight.

“At this time, Toronto police are still investigating, and we will, as always, provide all of our assistance as they work to determine exactly what happened,” Percy added. “We will also take away any learnings we can to make sure the TTC is the safest it can be.”
