Police believe 2 Ajax shootings related to ‘tow truck violence’

Durham Regional Police investigators believe two shootings that took place within minutes of each other in a residential neighbourhood in Ajax on Thursday night were connected to ongoing tow truck turf wars.

The first shooting took place just after 10:30 p.m. near Salem and Taunton roads, followed by a second shooting a few minutes later — in the same residential area about one kilometre away.

In both instances officers found bullet holes in the front doors of the targetted homes. People were inside both homes at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Police believe the same suspect or suspects are responsible for both shootings.

“These two incidents are believed to be in relation to the ongoing tow truck violence being seen across the GTA,” a Durham police release states.

“A review of security camera footage showed the two incidents happened within minutes of each other. A white Honda SUV was seen on video associated to a suspect, who was wearing all black and a black medical mask.”

The release adds that while most tow truck operators and businesses are legitimate, “there is evidence to suggest some are involved in organized crime.”
