Community saves abandoned newborn puppies ahead of holidays, says Toronto Humane Society

The Toronto Humane Society says three abandoned newborn puppies were saved after the community rallied to find them homes in time for the holidays.

The society says two-week-old Yorkshire Terrier puppies Gabby, Tonka and Raykin were among the litter of malnourished puppies brought to the shelter after their family could not provide the required care.

“Their mother had tragically passed away shortly after giving birth, leaving them without her care or nourishment. Overwhelmed by the challenges of feeding and caring for neonatal puppies, their family made the decision to surrender them to give them a chance to survive,” the Toronto Humane Society wrote in a post.

It says donors stepped up to help place the puppies into foster care, and their new parents helped nurse them back to health.

The Humane Society says the rising cost of living in Toronto is pressuring families to choose between their everyday needs and pet care, and the puppies’ story shows how communities can come together to support animals in need.

“This is a story we see far too often — newborn animals left vulnerable, pushed out of the picture because families lack resources, awareness, or finances to provide the care they need,” the humane society wrote in the post.

“We don’t know all the details of what happened, but we understand how easily a tragedy like this can spiral out of control. Whether it’s the emotional toll of losing a beloved pet or the unexpected time required for round-the-clock care of puppies that no longer had a mom to feed or nurture them, these situations are deeply challenging.”

The Toronto Humane Society says it’s accepting donations here.
