Environment Canada has lifted its snow squall warning for Newmarket, Georgina, and the northern York Region, but Barrie – Collingwood – Hillsdale is under a snow squall watch for Friday and heading into the weekend.

“Lake effect snow off Georgian Bay will continue today and tonight before strengthening again in intensity through the day Saturday. Snow squalls will likely last into Sunday,” the national weather agency states.

“Locally heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 20 to 30 cm. Higher amounts are possible. Reduced visibility at times in heavy snow.”

The national weather agency said the lake effect snow would move south from central Ontario on Friday, and blowing snow was expected near Georgian Bay.

For Toronto and the GTA, the forecast calls for possible flurries with windchill values in the upper teens.

On Thursday, Environment Canada had also issued a weather advisory predicting five to 10 centimetres of snow for areas of the GTA, including Peel Region, Oakville, Milton, Burlington and Halton Hills. That advisory has since been lifted.
