Cancellations and closures in Toronto, GTA as winter snow storm hits province hard

    York University halts new admissions to 18 undergraduate programs

    A snowfall warning was lifted on Thursday morning after the biggest snowstorm of the season lashed Toronto and the GTA with upwards of 20 cm of snow.

    There have been cancellations and closures as a potent winter storm brought up to 30 centimetres of snow across the province and the surrounding GTA.

    A snowfall warning and various winter storm warnings have been in effect for much of Southern Ontario since Tuesday. Toronto’s was lifted just before 9 a.m. on Thursday. You can find more details about the weather here.

    Here are the closures that have been announced so far:

    Schools, universities and buses:

    City of Toronto:

    • The City of Toronto says all recreation programs at school locations were cancelled as of 6 p.m. Wednesday. Programs at City Community Centre continued, as will all after-school recreation care programs.
    • Toronto District School Board: Schools are closed, and bus transportation is cancelled on Feb. 13.
    • Toronto Catholic District School Board: Schools are closed, and bus transportation is cancelled for Feb. 13.

    Peel Region:

    • Peel District School Board: All PDSB schools and offices/facilities are closed to students and staff on Feb. 13 due to winter weather conditions. All buses are cancelled. Closure of the schools includes cancellations of all activities located in the schools, including childcare, night school and permits.
    • Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board: Due to winter weather conditions, all schools and offices/facilities are closed to students and staff on Feb. 13.

    York Region:

    • York District School Board: All after-school/evening activities, including permits, on Wednesday, Feb. 12, are cancelled. Transportation services are cancelled, and all schools and board locations are closed to students on Feb. 13.
    • York Catholic District School Board: School buses are cancelled, and all YCDSB schools are closed to students on Feb. 13.

    Halton Region:

    • All Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District schools and workplaces are closed on Feb. 13, and transportation is cancelled for all Halton Region students.

    Durham Region:

    • Durham District School Board: Buses are cancelled in all zones, and elementary and secondary schools are closed on Feb. 13.
    • Durham Catholic District School Board: Buses are cancelled in all zones, and elementary and secondary schools are closed on Feb. 13.

    Hamilton:

    • Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board: All HWCDSB schools, adult education centres, school-based childcare centres and Community Use of Schools are closed on Feb. 13, and student transportation is cancelled.

    Simcoe County:

    Universities and colleges

    • University of Toronto (Mississauga): UTM is closed on Feb. 13 due to the overnight snowfall and this morning.
    • University of Toronto (Scarborough): Some classes have been cancelled for Feb. 13. Click here for the latest.
    • University of Toronto (St. George): Open for the day on Feb. 13.
    • Sheridan College: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All on-campus classes are cancelled, and facilities are closed. Virtual classes continue as scheduled.
    • York University: Open for the day on Feb. 13.
    • McMaster University: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.
    • University of Guelph: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.
    • Laurier University: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.
    • University of Waterloo: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.
    • Centennial College: Due to the significant snowfall affecting roads and campuses, campuses are closed for Feb. 13.
    • George Brown College: Classes are moving online, and campuses are closed due to severe weather on Feb. 13.
    • Humber College: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.
    • Seneca College: Campuses remain open, but in-person day classes will move online, where possible.
    • Mohawk College: Closed on Feb. 13 due to weather conditions. All courses and classes are cancelled.

    TTC

    • Check out the latest TTC service alerts here. The TTC has also updated its weather plan.
    • 506 Carlton: No service westbound from College Street at Lansdowne Avenue to High Park Loop due to streetcar derailment. Shuttle buses are running.
    • 47 Lansdowne: Detour southbound via Eglinton Avenue West, Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue West due to weather conditions.

    GO Transit

    A special schedule will be running on Feb. 13 due to the winter storm. You can visit See Schedules for the modified trip times and to plan ahead.

    Pearson Airport

    • Due to the snow storm, dozens of departing and arriving flights at Toronto Pearson International Airport have been delayed or cancelled. Airport officials are advising travellers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
    • On Thursday, Pearson said travellers going through domestic screening points in Terminal 1 are experiencing longer than usual wait times.

    Attractions

    • Toronto Zoo will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 13, due to the heavy snow and winter storm for the safety and well-being of the animals, staff, volunteers and guests. The zoo expects to reopen on Friday.
