A 33-year-old man was shot and killed in Scarborough on Monday night and police believe he was targeted.

Officers with Toronto Police Service (TPS) were called to Cedar Drive and Eglinton Avenue East around 8:30 p.m. for reports of a man lying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital by paramedics with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Jordan Thompson, 33, of Toronto.

Evidence markers were seen at a shopping plaza near Markham Road and Eglinton and north of that location on Cedar.

TPS Det. Rodney Benson said an “altercation” started at the plaza and “ended up on the street” near Eglinton and Cedar. However, he would not say whether the shooting happened at the plaza.

“The victim was involved in some sort of interaction with at least one other person […] There were a number of people here in the plaza so the number of people that were involved I can’t actually speak to, we know there was at least one.”

Det. Benson said police are still working on getting a description of a possible suspect or suspects.

Forensic officers continue to scour the scene and investigators are canvassing the neighbourhood looking for security video.

“This neighbourhood is getting very scary,” one man said in the shooting’s aftermath. “It’s terrible. It’s a sad, sad world. Crazy stuff,” another man said.

It’s Toronto’s 15th homicide of the year.
