A toddler is in critical condition after a vehicle struck a daycare worker and five young children in Oshawa. Alessandra Carneiro with the latest from investigators.

A two-year-old girl was airlifted to Toronto-area hospital after a woman and group of five small children were struck by a vehicle in Oshawa on Wednesday.

The collision happened Wednesday.

Police say a 62-year-old woman in a white Volvo was southbound on Niagara Drive and making a left turn onto Sheridan Street just before 9:30 a.m., striking the group as they were crossing the street. The intersection where the incident occurred is only a two-way stop and the driver did not have a stop sign prior to making the turn.

The girl was rushed to hospital with critical injuries and was then airlifted to SickKids where she remains in stable condition. Four other children were taken to a local hospital, one with serious, non-life-threatening injuries and three with minor injuries. The oldest was three years old while the youngest was seven months old.

The woman was an employee with a daycare in the area and was on her daily walk with the children who were all registered at the facility.

She was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The 62-year-old driver remained on the scene and was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

“There was no indication that there was any under the influence or any other criminal elements involved in their driving capacity at this point,” said Const. Nick Gluckstein. However, he added the incident is still under investigation.

“We want all drivers to slow down, obey the speed limits, obey the rules and regulations of the road. If you’re coming across roadways … where there are no stop signs, we are making sure that if there are pedestrians in the area, we’re making visual eye contact with them so that we know that they known that we’re there and that they’re crossing the road.”

He added that they were able to contact the two-year-old’s parents. The mother was able to arrive at the hospital and accompany the child in the air ambulance while the father was rushed by police escort to the Toronto hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact police.
