From Toronto landmark to waterfront eyesore … but not for much longer.
A federal court judge has cleared the way for the Captain John’s floating restaurant to be towed away.
The court has approved the sale of the rusty, asbestos-filled ship to Marine Recycling Corporation.
Erin Mikaluck with Ports Toronto told 680 NEWS that, weather-permitting, the vessel will be gone by the end of the month.
“Their core business is to tow and recycle vessels in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner,” she explained. “So they are going to commence the process of readying the ship to be safely towed.”
The company met all the environmental and insurance requirements and presented a detailed tow plan.
It will be towed to Port Colborne, then scrapped.
The court seized the boat when the former owner failed to pay more than $1 million in back taxes and other fees.
Despite the sinking of a previous sale, Ports Toronto is confident this one will stick.
