Snow makes a comeback in GTA, to commuters’ dismay

By News staff

The first drive back to work and school after the long weekend shaped up to be a snowy one across the GTA.

It will be a messy drive throughout the day on Tuesday with snow continuing to fall into the afternoon rush hour. It is expected to taper off around 5 p.m.

By mid-afternoon, Toronto Pearson recorded seven centimetres of snow, the largest one-day snowfall the city has received this winter, CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said. It is also the most snowfall the city has seen in one day since Feb. 21, 2015.

Areas in the eastern GTA like Whitby and Oshawa could get up to 10 centimetres of snow.

Air Canada issued a travel advisory, warning that flights to and from Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Airport could be delayed or cancelled due to the weather.

At one point at Pearson, there were 87 cancelled flights, many of them involving flights to and from eastern Ontario, Quebec and the U.S. Northeast.

There were some school bus cancellations outside of the GTA, mainly affecting students in Niagara Region and areas of eastern Ontario.

On a brighter note, the bitterly cold weather has left the GTA. The high on Tuesday is 0 C but it will be windy.

There is more good news for the end of the week: By Friday, the temperature is expected to hit a balmy 7 C. And for those keep track, spring is around four weeks away.
