Call it the end of an era – Queen Video has announced it is closing its iconic shop at 412 Queen Street West, just another victim of online competition and the younger generation’s aversion to taking a trip to get something they can automatically get on their cellphones.
Thanks a lot, Steve Jobs.
But with Queen Video boarding up, where can a guy go to find an old copy of Johnny Mnemonic, Repo Man or Kung Fu Hustle when it’s time to blu-ray and chill?
Thankfully, there are some options. They may not be as convenient as Queen Video, but hey, if you’re actually willing to walk, bike or bus to get a video, why not make an adventure out of it?
QUEEN VIDEO: Huh? Well, yes. While Queen Video’s flagship Queen Street location is closing down, you can still wander over to the Annex for their second location. There’s a good chance a lot of the videos you found on Queen will make the trip over to Bloor, too. Did someone say Eraserhead? Yep, he’s there. (480 Bloor St. W.)
BAY STREET VIDEO: One of the best things about this place is that they had funky-flavoured Old Dutch chips before anyone else did. They’ve also got a pretty massive selection of foreign films and films organized by director. Have you ever seen Hard Eight by Paul Thomas Anderson? It’s definitely worth a watch. (1172 Bay St.)
SUSPECT VIDEO: Well, this place isn’t long for this world either, unfortunately, as it’s slated to be torn down by the end of 2016 with the rest of Mirvish Village to make way for a massive condo development. In the meantime, why not have a Roman Polanski movie marathon? Rosemary’s Baby might be his best film, but in honour of the change in neighbourhood, maybe start with The Tenant. (605 Markham St.)
EYESORE CINEMA: This place is currently setting up in a new location at 1176 Bloor St. W. The best way to describe the old location was eclectic, and that is a pretty accurate description of their selection, too. Don’t expect to find the complete Full House collection here … but if you’re looking for some really unique B-rated horror flicks, this is the place. Pick up a cool T-shirt while you’re there, too. (Coming soon: 1176 Bloor St. W.)
VIDEOFLICKS: These guys have a little bit of everything. Kid movies, Westerns, sports movies, classics. You probably won’t find that cult classic you’ve been scouring the Internet for, but you could find a hidden gem among the racks of long-forgotten titles. Unless you haven’t forgotten Weekend at Bernie’s 2, that is. (1701 Avenue Rd.)
