Rob Ford’s former campaign manager charged with impaired driving

The man who helped usher in one of the wildest periods in Toronto’s political history is vowing that his own party days are over after a sobering brush with the law.
Nick Kouvalis, 40, was arrested and charged with impaired driving after crashing his Lexus in Tecumseh on Sunday. He’s scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
Kouvalis served as Rob Ford’s campaign manager and as Mayor John Tory’s chief strategist during their respective runs for mayor.
Kouvalis was largely credited with propelling Ford to the mayoralty in 2010, crafting a campaign that resonated with voters by vowing to “stop the gravy train.”
In a series of tweets, Kouvalis admitted he’s been addicted to alcohol since 2011 and called his arrest a “wake up call.”
“I look forward to starting my journey to permanent sobriety,” he wrote. “I’m very sorry to all those that I let down. I ask for all of your help and advice in dealing with this difficult addiction.”
