Halladay Goes The Distance As Jays Edge Tigers

Jays ace Roy Halladay pitched a stellar 10 innings Friday to lead Toronto over the American League champion Detroit Tigers 2-1.

Halladay, who’s now 2-and-0 on the season, allowed only six hits and threw 107 pitches on the night.

He also became the first hurler in two years to throw a ten-inning complete game, solidifying his reputation as one of the best in baseball.

Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman was nearly as good, allowing only one run and six hits over nine innings. It was his reliever, Fernando Rodney, who let the game slip away.

Rodney took over in the tenth and before long the bases were loaded. That led to a sacrifice fly from Alex Rios that brought home Aaron Hill.

The earlier runs both came in the form of home runs – from Rios for the Jays and Magglio Ordonez for the Tigers.

The victory was good news at the end of a bad day for the Blue Birds – who had to put their leadoff hitter Reed Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disc in his lower back, and take heavy hitter Troy Glaus out of the lineup as well over a bone spur in his heel and a hamstring issue.

Adam Lind will take over for Johnson for now, and Matt Stairs has also been called up to play outfield.
