Report: Cubs reach out to Pujols agent

The Chicago Cubs have contacted the agent for free agent first basemen Albert Pujols, according to an ESPN.com report.

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins have also been pursuing the three-time NL MVP and nine-time all-star.

The report speculates the Cubs also have interest in free agent first basemen Prince Fielder.

Last week the Cubs hired former Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum as its new manager, fueling speculation Fielder might be re-united with him in the Windy City.

With the MLB winter meetings set to begin next Monday in Dallas, there is curiosity surrounding what direction new Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer will take the club.

The Cubs are coming off a disappointing 71-91 season with a roster in need of a major overhaul. It’s been reported that starter Matt Garza and closer Carlos Marmol are being dangled as trade bait, but it remains to be seen whether the Cubs are looking to re-build or merely re-tool their ageing and expensive team.

Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers have also been cited as a dark horse to land Pujols while the Washington Nationals are said to be kicking the tires on a bid for Fielder.
