Teaching assistants at the University of Toronto are set to walk off the job Feb. 24 if they can’t reach a deal with the school, their union said Tuesday.
CUPE 3902 represents 4,200 teaching assistants, graduate-student instructors, lab demonstrators, invigilators and writing instructors at the university’s three campus’.
On Jan. 30, the membership rejected an offer by a vote of 96 per cent
“We have been trying to negotiate a fair contract for seven months,” said James Nugent, the bargaining team’s chief spokesperson. “We’ve been fighting for better learning conditions for our students and better working conditions for our members.
Last night, our members sent us back to the bargaining table to keep fighting for those things, and that’s what we intend to do.”
The assistants have been without a contract since April 30, 2011.
The union says its issues are tutorial and lab sizes, research support and pay rates.
