Memorial for teen fatally struck by train in Oshawa

A popular teenager who was fatally struck by a freight train was remembered at a memorial service in Oshawa on Thursday night.

Police say sixteen-year-old Jacob Hicks was wearing headphones when he walked into the path of a train on Monday. It’s also believed he was texting a friend at the time of the accident.

He was rushed to hospital but later died.

“It’s a sad loss to take,” said cousin Jovannah Ramsden. “It was such a violent way too. It’s just hard to believe because he was so young.”

The collision happened around 3:30 p.m. on Wilson Road, south of Bloor Street. Hicks was on his way home from class at nearby Maxwell Heights Secondary School.

“He was like a really nice guy,” said Jacob’s niece, Tionna Leblanc. “I loved him so much.”

Hicks’ funeral will take place on Friday at the Oshawa Funeral Home.

His family is asking donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
