Tractor-trailer driver freed after rollover on QEW

After being trapped for more than two hours, rescuers have freed the driver of a tractor-trailer that rolled over on a ramp to the Niagara-bound QEW in Burlington.

The driver’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, but an air ambulance was summoned and took him to a Hamilton-area hospital.

He was conscious and talking when he was finally freed.

“It was a very complicated recovery, because the truck was on its side and essentially the driver was hanging from his seat belt,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. “And he was also trapped with all the damage and the crushing of the cab.”

The rollover occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on the EB Highway 403 ramp to the Niagara-bound QEW. The accident closed the westbound lanes of the 403.

Debris from the accident also spilled over to Highway 407 below the ramp.

“It could have been much more serious that it is,” said Sgt. Schmidt.

“The truck is kind of teetering.”
