David Letterman returns to the airwaves Wednesday after making a deal with striking writers and his first guest will be Robin Williams.
The appearance of Williams, a Hollywood heavyweight, could be symbolic of the current divide between Letterman and his late night rivals, who’ve yet to make similar deals with writers following an almost two-month-long work stoppage.
Other talk shows might run into trouble booking significant entertainers as guests, as many of them have voiced their solidarity with the writers.
Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants came to an agreement with writers to have them return to his show despite the continuing strike, which started November 5. The deal also allows writers to contribute to Craig Ferguson’s late night program, also under Letterman’s company.
Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee will appear on Jay Leno’s show, while Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien haven’t said much about who’ll be on their shows. All return Wednesday night.
