Just when it looked like the National League was about to win their first all-star game since 1996, the walls came crumbling down once again, elongating an increasingly embarrassing stretch of futility against their American League counterparts.
The N.L. were just one out away from claiming victory when Trevor Hoffman botched things terribly, giving up three straight hits, including a two-run triple to Michael Young. His inexplicable collapse allowed the A.L. to rally for a 3-2 victory.
Paul Konerko kicked off the domino effect with a single and Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus followed with a double before Young lined a shot to the gap in right-centre.
“We came here to win the ball game,” said Glaus. “We weren’t going to quit or give up or do anything like that.”
Jays closer B.J. Ryan earned the win with a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera took command in the 9 th for his third career all-star save.
The A.L. is now unbeaten in their last 10 games (9-0-1) and boast a one-sided 154-98 recored in interleague play this season.
The win was about more than just bragging rights. The victory means the A.L. will once again have home-field advantage in the World Series.
