Pickering teen shot twice by police charged

A Pickering teen shot by police during a holdup of a veterinary clinic earlier this week has been charged with several offences, Durham police say.

The 17 year old, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces three charges, including robbery using an imitation firearm and disguise with intent.

His bail hearing was Wednesday at the hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Police said they confronted the teen as he was holding up Sheridan Veterinary Services, near the Pickering Town Centre, around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The teen was taken to a nearby hospital to be stabilized and then transferred to Sunnybrook’s trauma centre in critical condition.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates shootings involving officers, is now probing the case. The officer who fired the shots was not hurt.

The SIU’s John Line said the agency’s investigators are still trying to determine what preceded the shooting. A revolver and several ampoules were spotted on the ground near where the youth was shot. But it hasn’t been determined if they belonged to him.
