Toronto’s The Grove named best new restaurant in Canada

A British pub in the trendy Dundas and Ossington area of Toronto has been named the best new restaurant in Canada by Maclean’s magazine, with a special nod to chef Ben Heaton’s updated English cuisine.

The Grove was honoured as part of the magazine’s first “Canada’s Best Restaurants” issue, a 132-page publication that is available on Oct. 1.

The magazine’s food columnist Jacob Richler and food critics from across the country searched high and low Canada’s best meals, on any coast, in every price range.

Richler noted that Heaton, who served as Mark McEwan’s executive chef at One, and business partner Richard Reyes stand apart from other modern British-style pubs because of their commitment to the classics.

That includes an eel sandwich ($8) and a “lovely light touch” with fish.

The menu is short and the atmosphere is casual, Richler said, but that didn’t stop The Grove from receiving the honour.

Hawksworth at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver was named the restaurant of the year, while chef Normand Laprise of Montreal’s Toqué was awarded best chef.

The full list will be revealed in Maclean’s on Oct. 1.
