Jewish community celebrates the start of Rosh Hashanah

The Jewish community worldwide celebrated the start of the religious New Year.

Rosh Hashanah began at sundown on Sunday and will end on Tuesday.

The holiday is a time for festive meals, which traditionally include fish, wine and apple dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet year.

“Those are two sweet things you can eat from nature and they signify sweetness. Everything you hope for is sweet, happy and healthy,” Ricky Tollman, who was celebrating the holiday with his family in Toronto, told CityNews.

“The bread that we eat, the challah, is round as well to signify the circle of life in the new year,” his brother Jason explained.

Observant Jews also spend long hours in synagogues over the Days of Awe, which ends with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
