Election Only One Week Away

Toronto mayoral candidates are in the final stretch of the race – with only one week remaining until the city heads to the polls.

Advance polls closed Sunday at 6pm, and though voter turnout had been down by about 20 per cent through the workweek, the numbers were up over the weekend.

“Voting is a privilege to everyone,” said one early voter. “Everyone has to come to vote to get the city improved.”

It’s unclear how many people will actually show up to cast their ballot next Monday, but in the last election less than half of city residents participated.

Attendance at the latest debate wasn’t great either – and not just in terms of the audience. Incumbent David Miller was the only major candidate to appear at an event Sunday night organized by the city’s Muslim community.

Fellow competitors Jane Pitfield and Stephen LeDrew didn’t show up – LeDrew because he was ill, and Pitfield due to an apparent communications mix-up.

“This city’s 2.6 million people and you can never meet all of them,” Miller said. “There’s still a week left, lots of time to meet some more people, tell them where you stand.”

Miller and Pitfield will face off Monday night at Revival on College St. for a Q&A and debate on the city’s public spaces. LeDrew takes his campaign to Toronto’s Tamil community.
