Toronto EMS workers are warning often-exuberant shoppers to be aware of their surroundings in light of the slew of collisions involving pedestrians over the past few weeks. So far this year nine have resulted in fatalities.
“We’re put together pretty well but up against 1,000 pounds of metal coming at you, will you not win,” said Rob Selfridge, Toronto EMS.
In the holiday shopping rush, people are risking their lives, Selfridge suggests, darting in and out of traffic blindly in search of elusive deals, often while chatting on their phones.
“They talk about cell phones in cars being a distraction to a driver. But cell phones to a person walking are equally as distracting,” he stresses.
“Take the extra 30 seconds. Go to the crosswalk or the corner and make sure you are seen. It is not always just the responsibility of the driver.”
