Relatives Say Farewell To A Promising Student Whose Life Ended In The Depths Of A Cold Pond

As those around them prepare for a Christmas with loved ones and friends, the family of Kishoban Alakeswaran gathered at a funeral home to say a tear-filled farewell.

The 15-year-old was the second youngster to succumb to a terrible misadventure two weeks ago. The gifted high school student ventured out onto thin ice over a pond near Finch and Morningside on December 10th.

His mother sobbed in unending grief as her son’s casket was carried into Highland Memory Gardens Thursday morning. Mourners threw flowers at the coffin, as it made its final journey at the end of the sombre ceremony.

The boy’s family and friends were all in attendance and so was Muralitharan Nadarajah. He’s the father of Brunthan Nadarajah, the 11-year-old hero who tried to rescue his older friend when he slipped into the icy water. He died at he scene.

Alakeswaran succumbed a week later in hospital. He never regained consciousness.

The younger victim’s dad is trying to console himself that his son died a hero.

“This tragedy happened, what shall I do?” he asks plaintively. “Myself and my family is trying to get through it. At the same time really the media, prominent people, all the people are saying Brunthan is the hero. Brunthan went to rescue his friend. He’s brave. He’s the hero. Those kinds of words are giving some comfort to me and my family.”

Kishoban was submerged for at least 45 minutes before rescue workers – some of whom fell in themselves – were able to reach him.

The two boys were heading to a pick-up soccer game when the teen ignored warnings to stay off the ice because of the warm weather.
