Plane Part Crashes Through Roof, Narrowly Missing Sleeping Woman

Talk about a rude awakening.

A woman was sound asleep in her Chicago area home early Friday, when she received the shock of her life.

A piece of metal from an airplane passing overhead broke off and plunged directly  through her roof and into her bedroom, landing about 2 feet from her bed.

Dorothy Gohn heard the heavy thud that roused her out of her sound sleep and it took her a moment to figure out what had actually happened.  “I just thought it was something up in the ceiling that fell through,” she recalls. “I didn’t realize it was anything from a plane.”

But she got another shock when she went to investigate. “I went to pick it up and it was really hot,” she explains. “You couldn’t touch it. So I left it and when I finally picked it up, it had burned through my carpet, all the way to the floor.”

“It” was a 40-centimetre long part that came off a still unidentified aircraft. Federal Aviation Administration officials came to get the chunk and plan to examine it to see if they can determine where it came from.

Meanwhile, Gohn has been busy. After calling 911, she made another emergency call – to a roofer, who has since repaired the damage.
