Basic Instinct 2, Little Man Up For Razzie Awards

There have been lots of movie titles mentioned as Hollywood’s awards season kicks into full gear: Babel, Dreamgirls, The Departed … and Basic Instinct 2?

The much maligned Sharon Stone thriller, a sequel to the successful first film starring Stone and Michael Douglas, received a leading seven Razzie nominations when the short list was announced Monday.

The awards, which ‘dis-honor’ the worst films and performances of the year, are handed out annually the day before the Oscars.

In addition to worst film of the year, the box office dud received nominations for worst actress, for Stone’s performance, worst supporting actor for co-star David Thewlis and worst director for Michael Caton-Jones. Stone’s “lopsided breasts” made the shortlist for worst screen couple.

Also receiving seven Razzie nominations is the Wayans brothers comedy Little Man, about a thief who poses as a baby. It was included in the worst picture category, and Keenen Ivory Wayans was nominated for worst director. Shawn and Marlon Wayons shared a worst actor nomination.

Meanwhile another pair of siblings, Hilary and Haylie Duff, share a worst actress nomination for their roles in the film Material Girls.

“We stuck the siblings together to allow room for more dreck,” said Razzies founder John Wilson.

Competing for worst of the worst with Basic Instinct 2 and Little Man are the fantasy films BloodRayne and Lady in the Water, the latter directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Rounding out the category is Nicolas Cage thriller The Wicker Man.

Stone and the Duff sisters join Just My Luck’s Lindsay Lohan, BloodRayne’s Kristanna Loken, and Employee of the Month’s Jessica Simpson.

Stone has won a Razzie before – in 1994 for performances in The Specialist and Intersection.

“She’s what we call a Razzie repeat offender. Perhaps even a recidivist,” Wilson said.

Worst actor nominees facing off against the Wayans include Little Man co-star Rob Schneider, Tim Allen for making a trio of bad movies (The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, The Shaggy Dog and Zoom), Cage for The Wicker Man, and Larry the Cable Guy for the film Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector.

A new category introduced this year is for worst family films. The nominees include: Deck the Halls, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, RV, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause and The Shaggy Dog.

Wilson said one film he predicted at the beginning of the year would be among the Razzie competitors turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Wilson suggests Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa was a far better movie than many thought it would be. It was well-received by critics and audiences alike.

“At the first of the year, you could not have convinced me it wasn’t going to be a Razzie contender,” Wilson said. “I would like to publicly say that Stallone has made a good movie.”

The awards are handed out on February 24th, the day before the Oscars.

Academy Award nominees are announced Tuesday morning.
