Police raided a Toronto frat house Friday night, allegedly turning up an astounding $126,000 worth of Magic Mushrooms, cocaine, and other drugs.
But perhaps most disturbing of all was the reported discovery of a large supply of ketamine, an animal tranquilizer which is considered to be one of three substances often used as “date-rape drugs.”
Undercover officers and members of the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) rapid response team swarmed the house on St. George Street Friday night.
A 29-year-old man and a University of Toronto student are both charged with trafficking and several other drug offences.
So-called “date-rape drugs” can have no colour, smell, or taste, and are therefore easily added to drinks. Those who ingest them may become physically helpless and unable to remember what happened. As such, anybody who is slipped the substance becomes extremely vulnerable to attack.
There are three drugs that are usually considered to fall under this category:
- GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid) – it comes in a liquid, a powder, or pill form
- Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) – is a pill that dissolves in liquids. Newer versions turn blue when added to liquids, but the older form are still available
- Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride) – a white powder
Alcohol worsens the affects of these drugs, which act quickly in the body. Common effects are:
- Relaxation
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vision Problems
- Blackout
- Memory lapses
- Seizures
- Problems breathing
- Tremors
- Sweating
- Vomiting
- Dream-like feeling
- Loss of control and motor-skills
To keep from being a victim of one of these drugs, be sure to watch your drinks carefully, never leaving them unattended, and never accept them if you didn’t watch what went in them.
