Woman Struck And Killed By Train As Her Sister Watches

A shortcut home for three young women Saturday night ended in tragedy.

Police report that the trio was attempting to cross the train tracks on Denison Road East west of Jane Street, but only two of them made it.

“It appears at this point in time, from reports that we have from witnesses at the scene, that the female was in the company of her sister and her friend when they attempted to beat a freight train that was coming,” outlined Sgt Tim Burrows of Traffic Services.

The crossing arm that prevents cars from driving onto the route didn’t deter the women. Officers allege they ducked under the lowered beam as two freight trains approached.

But while they raced across to beat the light, one of them slipped.

“As they got to the track level…the victim fell and was run over by train,” Burrows described.

She was 20 years old.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene around 11:29pm, but it was too late. She died on the scene as her sister and friend watched.

Alcohol is not a factor in her death.

The name of the victim is being withheld at the request of the family.
