King St. W. Reopens After Concrete Falls From Historic Bridge

It’s not exactly London Bridge, but it was falling down. It’s another sign of the city’s crumbling infrastructure and it came down Thursday after police were forced to close a section of King St. W. near Atlantic Ave.

The reason? Some loose concrete on a bridge is creating a danger for those driving underneath it.

The normally busy thoroughfare was off limits from Sudbury to Atlantic to prevent anyone from getting hurt should more of the loose material come crashing down.

It was fully reopened on Friday.

Cops took the action after sizable cracks appeared in some concrete pillars holding up the span and some debris fell, fortunately missing anyone below.

If the small amount of material that’s come down had hit the windshield of a moving car, it could have been disastrous, especially since the problem was first noticed around the afternoon rush hour.

Why did it take so long to fix? The affected site is considered something of a historic structure and officials wanted to preserve as much of it as possible. And that meant taking their time to make it happen.
