Man Survives After 1,000 Lbs. Marble Slab Falls On Him

A 24-year-old man is lucky to be alive and may owe his survival to the Herculean efforts of his co-workers after being pinned beneath a slab of marble at a North York importing company Monday afternoon.

The victim wound up under the heavy load at 65 Densley Ave. near Keele and Lawrence around 1:15pm.

Reports indicate workers were unloading the heavy slabs at Saltillo Importing when one of them slipped off and pinned the man underneath. The chunk involved is said to weigh at least 1,000 pounds.

The victim was still alive when emergency crews reached him at the location but police say co-workers apparently managed to lift the huge mass off of him within four minutes, likely saving his life.

He was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived and has since been rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

The Ministry of Labour will likely be probing the incident.
