A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for numerous areas in the GTA. Hamilton, Halton-Peel, Niagara, Waterloo Wellington, Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes are all under a severe thunderstorm watch.
Environment Canada made the initial announcement around 2:40pm Wednesday for the Peterborough area, before adding the other regions shortly after 4pm.
Windsor, Leamington, Essex County and Chatham-Kent are also affected.
Warnings are usually issued six to 24 hours in advance, although some severe weather – such as thunderstorms and tornadoes – can happen quickly, with less than a half hour’s notice.
A brief but powerful burst of rain and wind hit Toronto around 6pm with some damage in the east end. (video below).
There have also been reports of a man struck by lightning in Hamilton.
