How much do you typically spend on your lunch on a workday – $5? $10?
Well on Thursday, Torontonians are urged to brown bag it, and donate those dollars to a good cause. It’s Second Harvest‘s 11th annual Lunch Money Day, with proceeds going toward helping feed the city’s less fortunate residents.
There are a number of ways to donate and for the first time ever you can do so online, at www.lunchmoneyday.com.
Second Harvest picks up and prepares surplus fresh food and then delivers it to social services agencies around Toronto. For every $5 donated, the organization can provide enough food for ten meals.
Second Harvest volunteers, including the troupe from Second City, will be at major TTC stations including Union Station on Thursday morning and afternoon, encouraging commuters to make a contribution. Second City will donate $5 to the organization from any regular ticket purchased online over the course of the day, with a goal to raise $10,000.
You can also donate at Starbucks locations around the GTA – purchase a turkey sandwich and orzo salad and part of the proceeds will go toward Second Harvest. Calphalon Culinary Center has its own promotion – it’s offering vegetarian pasta and salad in exchange for a minimum $5 donation. And at GTA Sobeys locations customers should look for the $2 Second Harvest coupon.
Citytv sponsors the event, and has set up a donation page for online contributions.
