Management Warned Before About Unit Where Wellesley Street Fire Started

Toronto Public Health reportedly told building management to clean up the apartment unit where last month’s six-alarm blaze started.
The fire broke out around 5pm on September 24 at a highrise at 200 Wellesley Street East, at Bleecker, and it took crews several hours to put it out.
According to a report in the Toronto Star, health inspectors warned Greenwin Property Management that apartment 2424 was packed with papers and other hazards.
They noticed the mess while inspecting for the building for bedbugs.
After the fire, Toronto Community Housing ended its contract with Greenwin for 200 Wellesley and took over operation.
More than 1,200 people left homeless by the fire were forced to stay at community centres or make arrangements with friends and family. Over the weekend, Toronto Community Housing let 500 people back into their units based on need and safety.
The province’s Fire Marshal’s Office is still looking into the cause of the blaze.
