City councillor calls for change to Toronto’s extended construction hours

By News Staff

Toronto residents have been dealing with a lot more construction noise since the start of the pandemic and one city councillor wants that to end.

The noise has been starting earlier and going later for more than a year now and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is urging the Doug Ford government to revoke these extended hours.

“Enough is enough,” said Wong-Tam in a tweet. “It’s been 16 long months since Ford overrode the city’s noise bylaw.”

“It’s time for him to give Torontonians back their sleep.”

The province extended construction hours shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. The new rules permitted residential construction to go from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day of the week.

The city’s previous bylaws only permitted construction noise between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Construction was not permitted at all on Sunday.

The regulation is currently scheduled to end in October but Wong-Tam – who has a member motion on the council agenda this week – says residents have had to deal with excessive construction noise for over a year and wants the rules changed back now.
