Canada wins women’s world hockey gold on Ouellette’s overtime winner

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Canada won gold at the world women’s hockey championship with a 5-4 overtime win over the U.S.

Caroline Ouellette scored the winner at 1:50 of overtime for Canada, which won its first world title since 2007 after losing three previous finals to the Americans.

It was Ouellette’s second goal of the game. Canadian captain Hayley Wickenheiser scored short-handed. Jayna Hefford and Meghan Agosta also scored. Goaltender Shannon Szabados made 40 saves for the win.

Defenceman Gigi Marvin scored a pair of goals for the Americans, who also got goals from Kendall Coyne and Brianna Decker. Molly Schaus stopped 34 of 39 shots in the loss.

Switzerland beat Finland 6-2 for the bronze medal, which was the first medal at the women’s world championship for the Swiss.
